Why do we wear Safa/ Paghri at a wedding?

Traditionally, the Paghris were worn as a headgear to protect against scorching heat, humidity, cold winters, dust, etc. It also plays a significant role in traditional Indian culture as it is a sign of pride and respect. In some Indian communities an exchange of Paghris between families signifies a close friendship. For these reasons over the years, it became tradition to wear Paghris to indicate pride in newly forming relationships. Nowadays, Paghris have become an essential wedding accessory, not only for the groom but for close friends and family as well.

Btw, do not be surprised to know that it’s not a male only accessory, girls can also rock the Pagris. Oh, and do not forget the little guests of your wedding, Check out these guests rocking the Paghris.

You will find that there are plenty of Paghri styles, and they are ever changing to meet the trends. However, some colors are more prominent and common as they represent the regional culture and raditions. For example, Pink color compliments the colorful Indian outfits, making it a common Paghari/safa color. Traditionally, Paghri are worn by using long cloth; however, it could be time consuming and difficult to manage when we are dealing with a tight schedule and a large group of Baratis. And for this reason, a ready-to-wear Paghri came to life. The ready-to-wear Paghris are easy to wear and are generally one size fits all.

How you want to dress up family members/groomsmen/friends is totally up to you. Some families choose the same style/ color for the both sides whereas some family opt for one color for the Groom side and another for the Bride’s side of family. You can also choose to only style Groomsmen or Bridesmaids or have both the wedding party and the guests. Just keep in mind that it is matching the overall color theme and that the safa/paghri you choose complements the Bride and Groom’s attire.
